2 Year Colleges

Monday, March 28th, 2005

For many of us, college was not our first priority while attending high school. There always seemed to be something else to get into. If college was not a priority for you in high school then maybe a 2 year college in Florida is what you are looking for. Community colleges and 2 year schools are a great way to transition from high school into a vocation or into a 4 year school or university. Many times, students who attend a community college are more readily accepted than transfers from other colleges and universities. This may seem hard to believe, but trust me, this is usually the case. So, if you did not get accepted to the college of your choice, it may make more sense for you to attent a local Junior college for a year or two and then attempt to transfer from there. You should talk to your school counselor to find out if doing something like this is the right decision for you, but you should know that this is a viable option.

Florida Institute of Technology

Thursday, March 17th, 2005

Just about every state has a big technical college and the Florida Institute of Technology is Florida’s contribution to the mix. Located in Melbourne, Florida, the Florida Institute of Technology offers students bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree programs. A private school, FIT was founded in 1958 and is located in an urban type setting. Of the 2,156 students that applied for the 2001-2002 academic year, 1,763 were accepted, making the Florida Institute of Technology a bit selective. Either the SAT or ACT is required for admission and the average SAT score of students was between 1060-1270.

The most popular majors students choose at FIT are electrical engineering, computer engineering, aviation management, marine/aquatic biology, and mechanical engineering. The vast majority of the classes at the Florida Institute of Technology have between 20 and 50 students. Average expenses were nearly $21,000 for the 2002-2003 academic year with another $5,800 or so for room and board. FIT is definitely one of the more expensive schools in Florida. 57% of undergraduates were determined to have financial aid needs and received on average $16,864 in financial aid.

University of Miami Loses to Virginia

Friday, March 11th, 2005

Sad news for all of the Miami Hurricane fans out there as the ‘Canes suffer a loss to Virginia in the ACC tournament yesterday. For those of us who like to watch the Univerisity of Miami dominate most sports, this loss is a sad one. My condolences go out to all who will not be able to function this Friday and will have to take off work and/or classes to recouperate completely.
